Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Market Watch, August 25th

Having just read a few books about Warren Buffett and Google, I am now inspired to incorporate some discussion about stocks into this Yu-Gi-Oh! blog. With that in mind, this post will contain a monster spell, and trap card that seems to be strongly trending upwards in this format and a monster, spell, and trap card [...]

Yu-Gi-Oh! Ban List Discussion: What Does Konami Want?

Konami Yu-Gi-Oh! Yugioh

Note: This blog post is not meant to have overly harsh or negative criticism. I personally love the game and feel it has a brighter future under Konami. My goal is to adapt to any format given and excel, not complain about it. Any criticism given is intended to be constructive.

This continues the discussion of what Konami seems to want from the game (as opposed to what Konami wanted from Yu-Gi-Oh!).

There are now two Forbidden lists for the Yu-Gi-Oh! advanced format to take data from. I have noticed a few trends from the past two lists and have come to a few conclusions about what Konami wants from the game. It’s only when we understand what Konami is telling us that we can offer legitimate critiques of the list.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Ban List Discussion: What Did Konami Want?

The new Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden List for 09/09 should be released today. Before discussing the specific list, I am making two design posts. This first post discusses a few now-abandoned design guidelines Konami had consistently used throughout Yu-Gi-Oh!

A second post will talk about what Konami now wants. I want to analyze Konami’s actions in the context of its own design from years ago, then discuss whether the approach is a good or bad idea.

Pointing out Konami Design Metrics

As a long-time player, I have taken note of many historical aspects of Yu-Gi-Oh! and believe that certain sensible design restrictions were abandoned. The early designers of Yu-Gi-Oh! didn’t really know what they were doing, so the actual patterns may not have super deep meanings. It seems many of the following metrics were accidental and/or random in nature.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Ban List Discussion: What Makes Solemn Judgment so Good?

Yu-Gi-Oh Solemn Judgment Ban List

The dueling community is rather uncertain about Solemn Judgment being placed on the Limited list. I see a number of posts and threads on the major Yu-Gi-Oh! forums discussing Solemn Judgment. Many of the threads are filled with average players who consider themselves elite.

The next time you post on a forum, remember there is a wonderful secret to Yu-Gi-Oh! You can accurately gauge someone’s skill level based on their appraisal of certain cards. Examples include cards like Heavy Storm and Mind Control . Those who want Heavy Storm banned or adjusted are ignorant of the benefits one Storm brings to the game. They have not reached a level of understanding high enough to appreciate the difference Storm creates. Players who do not appreciate (or vehemently call for) Mind Control’s limit have not developed an understanding of tempo. They remain ignorant of the fact that Mind Control creates about 3000 or more damage in favor of the player using it while creating card advantage and ruining the flip effect mechanic.

Day Two Competitors at Gencon SJC Indianapolis

Fili Luna wins SJC Indianapolis at Gencon!

Congratulations to Fili Luna. Taking down Adam Corn and Dale Bellido en route to a fourth finals victory at a Shonen Jump Championship is no easy feat. Luna’s victory with Blackwings signals the end of this format and puts a close to the busiest part of the Yu-Gi-Oh! season. This six-month period featured two Shonen Jump Championships, U.S Nationals, Canadian Nationals, the European Championship, and the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2009. Expect to see a recap of Indy and the format itself on go-YGO.com.
